The technique I am doing for the goldwork and silverworked undress for the current doll, Louise Juliana. It is called Opus Anglicanum, used in many ecclesiastical garments up to the 14th century. It covers either linen or velvet with gold and silver metallic threads to make a background texture or pattern. I learned this kind of stitch in my Embroidery Guild in my shire of Abhainn Ciach Ghlais. I am grateful for the knowledge to better enhance my own research.
For this current work, I am using linen fabric that has a floral pattern stamped on it. Was lucky to find this as a shirt in
a thrift shop and

it’s perfect for the pattern geometric like flowers and shapes shown on the painting. I also helps being in black and white I know exactly which metial I am applying to the respective color.
I had completed a belt as practice for my Opus Anglicanum, though Louise needs more clothing. Today I was able to make the smock for her, so nice she now has a layer of clothing. It’s also linen all hand stitched and gathered. So I am formulating a red fitted kirtle, then skirts for fullness. So lots more to do but for now the dressing has begun. Sharing more in the embroidery with some photos of shiny!
Oooooo-ahhhhh,
THL Marrin O’Kealy
