Autumn is Here

Its the end of September, the days and nights are cooler the equinox has passed. There is a crispness in the air, some of the leaves are beginning to show some color. At my home, I have been reorganizing my belongings for ease of locating items this past year. Previously in the spring reorganized my stash of fabric to just have natural fibers for the most part and all labeled by fiber or weave type.  The summer activity was purging personal clothing that no longer fit and household items that were not needed, which were later donated to charity shops. Consequently made room in several totes for the later craft supplies, which have also taken some reorganization this Autumn. Since moving to my current domicile in 2018, I had to leave some things behind that I couldn't take with me, large furniture mainly most was given to two of my siblings since they were needing things for their homes. During the move, I didn't get a chance to fully take stock of my belongings. So this was a much needed shift. Especially proud of setting up my loom and great wheel to better locations that they can be utilized.

With Covid-19 still present, avoiding many places indoors in the height of flu/Covid season. I am disappointed that many folks decided to not to pursue protecting their own health and those of their loved ones by not being vaccinated. All decisions have consequences, the current rise in case numbers and the happenings this winter will show the results of prior decisions. Consequently, I will be stocking up on all things this fall. Will go back to just grocery trips, takeout/ drive through and no SCA events. The policy the SCA has recently implemented is not strict enough for me to risk indoor events this winter. As someone who gets respiratory infections easily since childhood.

When it rains super hard, to the point of flooding low lying areas or flash flooding. We get a mild bit of water in the basement just on the edges. The drains become overwhelmed when the ground is that saturated. So that also has been a catalyst for the basement work as of late. Besides reorganizing the basement, moving items out from the walls and protect wooden objects with caster cups and plastic protectors.  I have been preparing for a SCA Demonstration.  There was an earlier one that was not pursued since there was not enough interest to get things off the ground.  I haven't been to a SCA event since Covid-19 started. Didn't want to return to in person event/ demo until vaccinated. Which I have been fully vaccinated since June.

This is my first Demo since being fully vaccinated, so making sure I don't forget anything for a good So this time I purchased a pop up shade for myself, its an 8 x 10 size. I plan on setting this up and also setting up my table with items to see if I need a second table. This ensures I can do everything for my fiber display myself. Plus I can make a check list for Saturday. Never used to be planner type but learned over the years forgetting things you need sucks.

Update the Muncy Library demo went very well. Lots of fantastic questions, I was able your tell the brief history of fabric from fiber to clothing. Lots of interest, I had one person like it so much they told their neighbor. The neighbor came by to talk with me. That was a first! Includes some pictures of me doing the thing. Such a great weekend, it’s a downer to go back to the regularly scheduled employment. Well it feeds the hobby.

Well that's about it for now, keep on keeping on.

Tudor Q and A

What is a Tudorosity?

A mashed combination of the words Tudor and Curiosity to create the word Tudorosity. Tudorosities is the plural form and the deffinition is as follows.

Tudorosity- an desire to learn or know anything about the Tudor dynasty associated with years 1405 through 1603.

Most people ask my why I make the Tudor garb ?

I find the clothing of this era not only beautiful but also challenging to sew. There is much more care and purpose put into making garments and wearing garments in the Tudor Era. I love the look of Tudor so much I wanted to explore the way clothes were made back then and the subtle changes in fashion and styles of time.

How did you get started in this interesting hobby?

I started with art first, I love to draw, paint, and sculpt all the traditional fine arts. So being able to draw helps me visualize the looks I want to create in my garb. History has always been a huge interest of mine and I've had a knack for sewing since I was 7 years old. It all started with doll clothes and I learned cross stitch embroidery from my grandmother when I was little. I am self taught sewer, crochet, knitting, embroidery and tatting. My methods are learned from books mainly and there is still so much more to learn.

What is my favorite outfit and why?

It would be like picking a favorite out of one of my future children, its impossible. I love all my gown creations and really like the distinct differences in all the styles clothing I make for the Tudor Era.

Do you make the whole outfit including hat, shoes, and undergarments?

I do have a goal of making a complete Tudor from the skin out. As of right now I make 90% of my gowns and accessories. The shoes and stockings, are bought online and the petticoats are a close reproduction but not made by me. .

How long does it take to make a gown?

It all depends on the type of gown. The making relies on the time period and class of the design. Generally if I work on it 8 hours a day on a sewing machine it will take 3 days to get the basics and another 5 days to do finish hand-sewing details and beading. So a week to a week and a half if working on it steady for that amount of time. I work a full-time job so it does take longer than a week to complete. I put over 40-100 hours per outfit depending on its complexity, its like its own full time job of sorts.

Do you make renaissance clothing for sale or custom orders?

No, due to new employment and changes in my lifestyle. Unfortunately, I have no time to support sewing for others. Though I recommend sewing lessons for those adventurous few. There are many fine folks who make and sell historical clothing. I suggest guidance with sew from many fine historical enthusiastic costumers out on the internet.

How long have you been making these elaborate costumes?

I have been in the Society of Creative Anachronism coming up on my 18th year. Active since 2004 working at demonstrations and volunteering when I could between working and other life's distractions. I really concentrated on Tudor sewing in 2007 and worked with patterns to learn proper fabrics, techniques, fit, and silhouette. I really enjoy the eras transition from a medieval form fitting layered cotterdie to the boned Tudor kirtle and then to structured Elizabethan clothing.
