In the Netherlands, his feast day is observed by children leaving their shoes out with hay or carrots for his horse. In return, presents are left for the children to be discovered the next morning if they are good. Although if a child was naughty they could expect to receive coal. My in laws celebrate this holiday along with traditional holiday celebrations.
This also is the same day as Krampusknact. The Krampus a devil goat like hominid creature with curled horns, dark fur from head to foot, with hoofed feet and tail. This intimidating figure also has a taste for violence and kidnapping. This impish beast who carries a bundle of switches to beat bad children and a large sack to take very bad children away. This was the opposite faction to Santa Claus aka St Nicholas who would reward good children with gifts and sweets. According to lore these two entires work together to reward the good and punish the wicked.
Interestingly Informative,
