Unicorn Companions

For the sake of awesomeness that needs to be shared amongst friends. I am going to tell you about the website, Gift of Mercury. It’s a group of overseas artisans that make magical playable fully pose-able stuffed animals. Keep in mind these are not stock they send out they are made to order, so each one is unique and has small variances.

I fell in love with a piece of art this depicted a mythical beast, a cross between a cat and a peacock. I always wondered what an animal would be like in real life. Also would be neat to have more than just a 2d rendering of this whimsical art. Well the folks at Gift of Mercury must have read my mind.

Peacocat
Then a few years later online, I ran a crossed their Peacocat made by Gift is Mercury. Looked just like the art but a really nice custom stuffed animal. Plus their site seemed to have many more interesting real and mythical beasts.  So I ordered a green version of the Peacocat and she is just like the pictures on their site. My feathered friend hangs out with my Folkmanis peacock puppets on a high shelf. Safely away from my felines who love feathers. High inaccessible shelves are the perfect thing for the felines who like to chew, even on faux fur. Plus anything organic like real fur or feathers, ever the hunters. Certain felines might think this is a rival for cuteness and would want to fight or play with it. s|So safer away with the peacock puppets.

So I was planning on seeing what other wondrous creatures they would create. Lo and behold their third iteration of a unicorn just dropped a few months later. Pleased with my prior purchase, I ordered a custom unicorn this time in beige colors with a silver horn, like a medieval unicorn. She is just done and just loves her. So stinking cute! I sent a picture from one of the Cluny Tapestries of the unicorn in captivity. Basically to show that I was looking for a Medieval-style unicorn instead of something more modern. The only part is a tuft on the chin, which was not included in the sculpture, plus not sure how well the fur attached would stay for an extended period of time. So just left it as is, since everything else is correct.

That was while I was working on the Sun and Moon doll project. Figured these are more dressed like the ladies from the unicorn tapestries and should have companion animals. So I decided to also order a dark unicorn but with gold accents. So these should really elevate the pictures for my dolls. Also, it’s great we have some cool friends for Sun-Aurora and Moon-Luna. Haven’t come up with names for the unicorns yet but have time. The black one is in progress and will be sent photos when done.

Both unicorns are shipping together, saving the chance that one might get lost. Plus I don’t mind being patient. Will be difficult to not play with the dolls and their new friends when they arrive in the mail. Aren’t we all just children at heart after all?

Although not sponsored, I would recommend a look at www.giftofmercury.com site as they have some amazing artistry. This time, since not ordering a stock piece. The creative team was in regular communication to get my opinion on my custom creature. You can customize and creature but depending on the changes will depend on if you pay for a small, medium, or large change. Each level of customization has its respective fee. The website explains the process pretty well. Rare few low reviews, you can tell the team really tries to make their customers happy.

I would say these are meant for play but for older children over the age of 10. Not for rough play but would be a good travel buddy as long as not exposed to the elements. Or left in a vehicle in heat or cold would be rough on most toys. Hoping the cats will have the sense to leave them alone. We shall see, Star my cat decides she wanted to bathe a stuffed animal bunny rabbit, anything is possible. Cat nor the plush bunny was harmed by the bathing but were relocated to a higher spot for safety.

Hoping things are well for you, hanging in here the best I can.

Tudor Q and A

What is a Tudorosity?

A mashed combination of the words Tudor and Curiosity to create the word Tudorosity. Tudorosities is the plural form and the deffinition is as follows.

Tudorosity- an desire to learn or know anything about the Tudor dynasty associated with years 1405 through 1603.

Most people ask my why I make the Tudor garb ?

I find the clothing of this era not only beautiful but also challenging to sew. There is much more care and purpose put into making garments and wearing garments in the Tudor Era. I love the look of Tudor so much I wanted to explore the way clothes were made back then and the subtle changes in fashion and styles of time.

How did you get started in this interesting hobby?

I started with art first, I love to draw, paint, and sculpt all the traditional fine arts. So being able to draw helps me visualize the looks I want to create in my garb. History has always been a huge interest of mine and I've had a knack for sewing since I was 7 years old. It all started with doll clothes and I learned cross stitch embroidery from my grandmother when I was little. I am self taught sewer, crochet, knitting, embroidery and tatting. My methods are learned from books mainly and there is still so much more to learn.

What is my favorite outfit and why?

It would be like picking a favorite out of one of my future children, its impossible. I love all my gown creations and really like the distinct differences in all the styles clothing I make for the Tudor Era.

Do you make the whole outfit including hat, shoes, and undergarments?

I do have a goal of making a complete Tudor from the skin out. As of right now I make 90% of my gowns and accessories. The shoes and stockings, are bought online and the petticoats are a close reproduction but not made by me. .

How long does it take to make a gown?

It all depends on the type of gown. The making relies on the time period and class of the design. Generally if I work on it 8 hours a day on a sewing machine it will take 3 days to get the basics and another 5 days to do finish hand-sewing details and beading. So a week to a week and a half if working on it steady for that amount of time. I work a full-time job so it does take longer than a week to complete. I put over 40-100 hours per outfit depending on its complexity, its like its own full time job of sorts.

Do you make renaissance clothing for sale or custom orders?

No, due to new employment and changes in my lifestyle. Unfortunately, I have no time to support sewing for others. Though I recommend sewing lessons for those adventurous few. There are many fine folks who make and sell historical clothing. I suggest guidance with sew from many fine historical enthusiastic costumers out on the internet.

How long have you been making these elaborate costumes?

I have been in the Society of Creative Anachronism coming up on my 18th year. Active since 2004 working at demonstrations and volunteering when I could between working and other life's distractions. I really concentrated on Tudor sewing in 2007 and worked with patterns to learn proper fabrics, techniques, fit, and silhouette. I really enjoy the eras transition from a medieval form fitting layered cotterdie to the boned Tudor kirtle and then to structured Elizabethan clothing.
